Decreto di concessione n. 205 del 10/04/24 Intervento del PNRR M4C2-12. 1 Responsabile del Procedimento: Alessandro Dalla Torre FBK is looking for a Researcher in the field of miniaturized Radio Frequency (RF) passive components and smart antennas; this position is partially funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is a private research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research.
Each research area is assigned to a specific research Centre, of which there are twelve totals.
Information regarding the research Centres, their activities and production are available at .
In particular, the FBK Centre for Sensors and Devices (FBK-SD) () is an applied research centre that operates in the following scientific and technological areas: quantum technologies, detectors, microsystems and integrated systems.
The FBK-SD has extremely advanced technical knowhow in innovative devices design and fabrication technologies as well as in the system integration.
The strategic mission of the FBK-SD is scientific excellence combined with the ability to exploit research results.
The innovation model is open to collaboration in national and international expertise networks. Workplace Description The candidate will be working in the Microsystems Technology (MST) unit of FBK-SD.
The MST Group uses standard semiconductor wafer fabrication equipment to prototype innovative devices based on various technologies for MEMS devices, which can be used in different areas of applications.
In addition to world class research, we are involved in projects and innovation activities with international and local industrial and academic partners.
The candidate will be working in collaboration with the micro-nanofabrication laboratories of FBK-SD, including the two main cleanrooms: one is mainly dedicated to CMOS-compatible devices, e. g. radiation detectors, and the second one is dedicated to non-CMOS compatible processes for microdevices and sensors for different applications.
The microfabrication area also includes a testing infrastructure, a packaging cleanroom, and an integration laboratory. Background information and description of research projects This position is offered within the IPCEI ME/CT project. In the IPCEI ME/CT project, FBK intends to significantly expand and improve its manufacturing and integration facilities to achieve high-level and reliable heterogeneous production capabilities to maximise research and competitiveness in the market.
In IPCEI ME 1, FBK is mainly work on the integration of new materials ( Silicon Carbide & Germanium-on- Silicon) and hetero-integration to extend the capabilities of already established silicon platforms for different classes of devices. Job Description This position will be focusing on the development of innovative Radio Frequency (RF) passive components based on MEMS technology, known as RF-MEMS, for next generation beamforming systems and miniaturized antennas ( Beyond-5G/6G applications).
Such devices, among which micro-switches, multi-state delay lines and power attenuators, will contribute in the development of smart packaging and integration technologies implemented in the IPCEI ME/CT project at FBK. The work activity of the required figure will be dedicated to the conceptualization, design, simulation and experimental verification of RF-MEMS passive components, capitalizing on electro-mechanical actuators coupled to the RF domain.
The candidate will contribute to the development of highly-integrated RF-MEMS complex devices in a multidisciplinary team, especially by designing various RF passives (e. g. , switches & switching units, multi-state delay lines and attenuators), miniaturized antennas, evaluating the expected performances by testing and modelling and reviewing the device manufacturability.
A part of the activity will be dedicated to the preparation of setups and procedures for test activities, data analysis and performance evaluation in general.
A minor share of the work will be focused on microfabrication technologies as a complementary activity for the design tasks. Job requirements The ideal candidate must have the following requirements: PhD degree, preferably in the field of electrical engineering/electronics, telecommunications, mechanical engineering or physics; Solid background and experience in design, modelling, simulation and experimental testing of Radio Frequency (RF) passive components and miniaturized reconfigurable antennas; Experience in the field of MEMS, preferably for RF applications; Experience in design and experimental characterization of silicon devices; Language assessment according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): level of knowledge required.
Knowledge of English will be verified during the interview on a technical or scientific topic and must be equal to or exceed level B2.
Definitions of levels can be found at the following link ; Experience in working for research projects; Teamwork approach, good communication and relational skills; Pronounced abilities in prioritizing tasks and effective time management; Strong orientation to results, determination, flexibility and aptitude for problem-solving. The following requirements will provide additional score in the evaluation process: Knowledge of multiphysics FEM and analytical modelling; Knowledge of measurement/lab-based setups customization; Knowledge of statistical experiments methods; Knowledge of Machine Learning methods applied to the design of physical devices; Knowledge of both written and spoken Italian. Employment Type of contract: fixed-term contract Working hours: full-time (38 h per week) Start date: January 2025 Duration: 36 months Contract type: CCPL Research Foundation Personnel ( Personale/ Contrattazione-collettiva/ Rinnovo-CCPL-delle- Fondazioni) for a third level Researcher, the current gross annual remuneration is Euro 41. 475,00. Workplace: Povo, Trento ( Italy) Benefits: flexi-time, company subsidized cafeteria or meal vouchers, internal car park, welcome office support for visa formalities and for research in accommodation, supplementary pension ( Resaver, Laborfonds) and health fund ( Sanifonds), family-work balance, free training courses, support on bank account opening, discount on public transport, sport, language course fees, counseling and psychological support service.
